Asian Eye’s Dr. Robert Ang bags AAO’s Best Poster Award

Published on: February 7, 2022

Asian Eye Cornea and Refractive Service Director Dr. Robert Ang received the Best Paper Award at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting held from November 12 to 15, 2021 at New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

In his research PO129 Depth of Focus and Visual Performance of Two Different Presbyopia-Correcting Intraocular Lenses (IOLs), it showed how the TECNIS Synergy IOL and PanOptix IOL provide clear and improved vision for patients after their cataract surgery.

Both presbyopia and cataracts are age-related eye conditions.

Presbyopia develops when the eyes have more difficulty in focusing as people age. It typically starts at 40 years old, making it harder to read small fonts. It is normally corrected by wearing reading glasses.

Cataracts, on the other hand, happen when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy. As it advances, it can lead to blindness. Through cataract surgery, the doctor will remove the natural lens with cataract and replace it with an artificial lens, more commonly referred to as intraocular lens or IOL. In many cases, patients who used to wear eyeglasses before the surgery will still need to wear eyeglasses afterwards.

However, the use of presbyopia-correcting IOLs will enable patients to have clear near, far and intermediate vision, removing the need for eyeglasses or reading glasses. For patients, it is a pleasant and convenient change in the new chapter of their lives.

Congratulations, Dr. Ang. You make your Asian Eye family proud!
