Filipino doctor makes it to the 2018 Top 100 Power List of The Ophthalmologist

UK-based publication The Ophthalmologist has named Asian Eye Institute Glaucoma and Cornea and Refractive Surgery (LASIK) specialist Dr. Robert Edward Ang as one of the most influential eye doctors in the eye care industry. He is the only Filipino doctor included in the list.

Through its Power List, The Ophthalmologist recognizes the leaders, pioneers and game-changers in the field of ophthalmology. Every year, it asks its readers to nominate individuals or organizations that they believe have made the biggest impact in the world of ophthalmology. Apart from ophthalmologists or eye surgeons, the list also includes scientists, engineers and CEOs.

As the director of Asian Eye’s Cornea and Refractive Surgery Service, Dr. Ang is a renowned LASIK surgeon who specializes in treating patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. He has also worked on cutting-edge research on new technologies that improve diagnosis and treatment of different eye conditions. By working with the biggest pharmaceutical and medical device companies in the cataract, refractive and glaucoma spaces, he has contributed to developing innovative surgical techniques for Lasik and cataract surgeries and applying new glaucoma treatment options. As a result, he has been invited to conduct numerous lectures and authored several book chapters and international publications.

He and his research team have been recognized by prestigious international organizations, including American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (APACRS). In fact, he is a 5-time winner of Best Paper Session Awards at the ASCRS. He also received the APACRS Certified Educator (ACE) that recognized his experience in using Supracor technology that allows patients with presbyopia (difficulty reading at close distances) to reduce or eliminate the need for reading glasses. In 2017, he bested other American and Asian doctors and was recognized as the TOPGUN Best Overall Instructor for his expertise and contributions in the field of ophthalmology.

Recently, Dr. Ang won runner-up honors at the 36th ASCRS Film Festival in Washington D.C. for his video on exchangeable intraocular lenses (IOLs). IOLs are artificial lenses that replace the natural lens with cataract. They usually come in one piece and have two parts – the optic (the lens with grade) and the haptic (the side struts that hold the lens in place inside the eye). His video showed his ongoing study on a 2-piece IOL, wherein the optic can be exchanged with a new one. This is beneficial for people who have undergone cataract surgery and might need to have their IOL replaced in the future.

Dr. Ang says, “I’m extremely honored to be included in the Power List and be among innovators and game-changers. This motivates me as a researcher to continue working on new technologies and methods that can help more people improve their vision and enjoy happy and productive lives.”

“With the help of my fellows and my research team, we look forward to continuing to provide patients with the best quality care across our expanding clinic network. Filipinos deserve the best and the work we do is our way of thanking them for trusting Asian Eye Institute with their eye care needs,” he adds.

Cataract Awareness Month: Reclaim Your Freedom, Restore Your Sight

June is Cataract Awareness Month, and as a leading eye center in the Philippines, Asian Eye aims to celebrate and raise awareness about the importance of cataract screenings and drive more individuals to seek timely treatment for cataracts. Cataracts are a common concern among older Filipinos and one of the major causes of visual impairment. According to the Philippine Eye Research Institute, there are 1.18 million people suffering from cataracts, with roughly 400,000 needing surgery.

Cataracts are the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which can lead to symptoms such as blurry vision, difficulty seeing at night, and increased sensitivity to glare. It can lead to blindness if left untreated, so it’s essential to have them removed when they begin to interfere with your daily activities, such as driving, watching TV, or cooking.

Cataract surgery is a common procedure that involves removing the cloudy natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens. Laser cataract surgery offers several advantages over traditional surgery, and Asian Eye is proud to offer patients with cutting-edge solutions for their eye care needs.

Asian Eye utilizes VICTUS Femtolaser technology from the renowned German brand Bausch + Lomb. This advanced technology is able to break up and remove the cloudy lens using significantly less energy, minimizing the risk of damage to surrounding tissues and promoting quicker healing.

Regular visits to your eye doctor are paramount, as they can advise you on the timing of the surgery and explain the benefits and risks involved. If you have an elderly loved one who complains of cloudy or blurry vision, consider giving them the gift of sight with the following Cataract Screening and Surgery deals:

40% off for one (1) cataract screening

50% off for two (2) or more cataract screenings

20% off on cataract surgery

*if scheduled within one (1) week after the screening or deposit is given within (2) weeks

It’s important to make informed decisions with a trusted eye care specialist and to book an appointment with Asian Eye to take proactive steps towards better vision and eye health.
