One of the symptoms of COVID-19 is conjunctivitis, which is characterized by eye redness, tearing and itchiness. If you experience conjunctivitis along with other symptoms like fever, hacking cough and body malaise, call the nearest hospital to determine what to do next. Avoid self-medication!
Is it better to wear eyeglasses instead of contact lenses?
It is important to avoid touching your eyes to avoid the infection. Switching to eyeglasses helps prevent you from touching your eyes, which is common when you are putting your contact lenses in or removing them, or disinfecting them. If you need to wear contact lenses, make sure you practice good contact lens hygiene.
Wearing eyeglasses does not provide 100% protection. It only adds a layer of protection from droplets. Use protective goggles if your are caring for a sick or suspected COVID-19 patient.
Rubbing or touching your eyes puts you at risk of getting the virus. But if you need to use eyedrops, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after putting in the eyedrops.
