Sometimes, getting a new pair of eyeglasses can be overwhelming. There are a lot of things to consider.

Which style reflects your personality?

Which frames match your face shape?

Which material is durable and ideal for your lifestyle?

Which lenses are right for your eye condition?

But aside from these, there are also other factors you need to consider so they fit what you need and are comfortable to wear even for a long period of time.

Rim Types

There are three (3) frame types, and each type offers a different look and feel.

- Full-Rim Frames: The lenses are fully covered by the frame. Considered as the most durable among the three (3) rim types, these frames can withstand accidental drops. These can also support large and thick lenses, but in general, these can be a little heavier.

Half-Rim Frames: The frames cover the top half of the lenses, and the bottom part is held by a transparent nylon. Because it is lightweight, it is comfortable and is perfect for people who wear eyeglasses for a long time. However, these cannot support thin lenses and are not usually recommended to people with an active lifestyle.

Rimless Frames: These have no rims – the lenses are exposed on all sides, but are secured using screws into the bridge and end pieces. These are a little more delicate and the lightest among the three (3). Because of their minimal look, these may be worn in formal and casual occasions.

Hinge Types

Hinges, also called joints, connect the frame front and the eyeglass temples (arms). These let the temple of your glasses open and close. The three (3) main hinges include:

Standard or Barrel Hinges: Like door hinges, barrels are fit together and locked with a small screw. Standard hinges are durable and easy to repair. Just use your eyeglass repair kit! These are not ideal for people with an active lifestyle, and they lack flexibility. Visit an optical shop if you need to have your eyeglasses adjusted.
Spring Hinges: The frames make use of a small spring that allows the eyeglass temple to be more flexible and have a greater range of movement. These offer a snug fit, so less adjustments are needed and can be used for physical activities like jogging. These are also a good choice for kids. These should be handled with care as these are hard to repair.
Hingeless or No Hinge: The frames are made to fit the head of the eyeglass wearer. There are no barrels, screws or springs to join the frame front and eyeglass temples. But these are made of strong materials, so they are more durable. Careful, though, these can be hard to adjust or fix.
