Asian Eye Institute Inks New Regional Partnership with Vietnam’s Cao Thang Hospital Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam –Asian Eye Institute (Asian Eye) inks partnership with Cao Thang International Eye Hospital (CTEH),an eye hospital in Vietnam. Asian Eye is providing EyeScan screening technology and reading services to detect signs of eye disease in Vietnamese patients across selected branches in Ho Chi Minh.

According to Asian Eye President Mr. Benjamin K. Liboro, “This partnership aligns with our vision of becoming an international resource in the diagnostics and treatment of eye diseases and visual impairment. We are happy to work with Cao Thang Hospital in fighting preventable blindness and make eye care more accessible.”

EyeScan is an innovative vision screening service that takes digital images of the outer and inner parts of the eyes.It detects signs of eye diseases like cataract, glaucoma, retinal disease and corneal disease. CTEH President Mr. Danh Khoi Nguyen shares, “As the first hospital in Vietnam to be JCI-accredited and also the first to become a member of the Asean Association of Eye Hospitals (AAEH), we fully appreciate the privilege of joining Asian Eye Institute (Asian Eye) and Jakarta Eye Center (JEC) in the EyeScan project.We are happy to contribute our modest part in preventing blindness, using advanced technology and artificial intelligence, at an affordable cost to the population,” Mr. Nguyen adds.

Asian Eye, JEC and CTEH are all members of the AAEH. The EyeScan project is the first time that these Asean hospitals are able to work together and promote cooperation and joint research within the region, in line with the objectives of the AAEH. “We are confident that this first step will lead us to the exciting transformation and convergence of eye care practice in the Asean region,” adds Mr Nguyen.

According to Jasmine Nguyen, CTEH Vitreo Retina Business Development Manager, Vietnam’s Ministry of Health indicated that 2 million Vietnamese lose vision in one eye while 400,000 Vietnamese lose vision in both eyes. Of that, 10.5% lose their vision due to vitreo-retina diseases. In 2017, it was found that over 5.5% of the adult population in Vietnam have diabetes. Many of those patients develop diabetic retinopathy within five years, due to the lack of information on how to prevent them. In a country with a population of 90 million, most eye doctors are found in the urban centers and the availability and use of eye care services between provinces vary. This limits people’s access to quality eye care services. By using EyeScan, CTEH can quickly and more easily identify patients that need specialist care from those that need annual routine checkups.

With this new development, Asian Eye Institute is positioning the Philippines as hub for delivering high quality and innovative eye care services in Asia and the Pacific Rim. This is the second regional partnership for Asian Eye. In 2017, Asian Eye partnered with the Jakarta Eye Center to offer EyeScan screening and reading services across different locations in Indonesia. Jakarta Eye Center, Cao Thang Eye Hospital and Asian Eye Institute are all internationally- accredited hospitals who are also members of the World Association of Eye Hospitals (WAEH). Asian Eye Institute is the only eye center from the Philippines that is part of the WAEH.

At the recent American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Annual Meeting on April 8, 2024, Dr. Robert Ang of Asian Eye was awarded a prestigious Gold medal in the Cataract Olympics for his video presentation titled “Cataract Technology Hurdles.”

Held in Boston, Massachusetts, USA from April 05 to 08, 2024, the annual meeting featured the participation of outstanding ophthalmologists and eye care professionals from across the globe.
