As you age, your eyes become more prone to developing serious eye diseases such as cataract (the clouding of vision), age-relatedmacular degeneration (loss of central vision) and glaucoma (vision loss due to abnormally high eye pressure). While you can’t stop your eyes from aging, you can keep them healthy and reduce your risk of vision loss by following these six simple tips:
Most serious eye problems do not have symptoms initially. If you are aged 40 and above, or have been wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses regularly for a long time, or have a family history of any eye disease, hypertension and diabetes, it is important for you to see your ophthalmologist every year. The earlier an eye problem is detected, the earlier it can be treated.
It’s been said that carrots are helpful in maintaining healthy vision, but did you know that leafy greens, citrus fruits and nuts are good options too? They are the best sources of lutein, antioxidants, zeaxanthin and vitamins C and E that can protect against the risk of eye diseases like cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Food rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and tuna, can also help counteract dry eyes.
Sunglasses are great for accessorizingbut they are also made to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Studies show that prolonged exposure to the UV rays can lead to retinal problems and cataracts. They can also cause wrinkles and cancer around the eye. Make sure your eyewear blocks 99% to 100% UVA and UVB rays.
Does anyone in your family have cataracts, glaucoma or retinal problems? If so, get your eyes checked regularly. Eye problems are often hereditary, giving you a higher risk for developing the disease. The sooner you learn about what you could be at risk for, the earlier you can seek treatment and prevent further damage.
We’re all guilty of spending too much time using our smart phones, tablets, laptops or personal computers. What we don’t realize is that prolonged use of gadgets actually puts a big strain on our eyes. We get too focused on the screen that we tend not to blink as much. This leads to not only eyestrain but dry eyes as well. Dry eyes causes a burning or itchy sensation in the eye, eye irritation, eye redness and excessive tearing. If you can’t help it, remember the 20-20-20 rule! Look away from the computer every 20 minutes, and look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Smoking is harmful for every organ in your body, including your eyes. It lessens the circulation and flow of oxygen and nutrients to the eyes. A person who smokes doubles or even triples his risk of having cataracts, macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy. Smoking is also known as an eye irritant that causes dry eyes.
