What Are Pediatric and Adult Strabismus?

Strabismus is a misalignment of the eyes, often caused by underlying eye conditions or external factors. It can be present in children (pediatric strabismus), but it can also develop later in life (adult strabismus). Left untreated, it can result in double vision, eye strain, headaches, and other symptoms.

How Do You Treat Pediatric and Adult Strabismus?

A comprehensive eye examination is necessary to diagnose strabismus properly. Depending on the severity, pediatric or adult strabismus can be managed through vision therapy, corrective glasses, prism lenses, and orthoptic exercises. Surgery may also be necessary to improve eye alignment.

Strabismus vs. Amblyopia

Many people confuse amblyopia with strabismus because they seem similar. Amblyopia, commonly known as “lazy eye,” is caused by reduced vision in one eye due to underuse. Strabismus, in some cases, leads to amblyopia. The misalignment of the eyes causes the person to use only one when focusing on an object. For both conditions, early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent permanent vision problems.

Genetic Eye Conditions

As the name suggests, genetic eye conditions result from abnormalities in an individual’s genes. They are often inherited from parents and can affect various parts of the eye. Some of them can lead to vision impairment or even blindness. A few notable examples are retinitis pigmentosa and glaucoma.

Cataract

Cataracts are a common eye problem in which the eye’s natural lens becomes clouded. It usually develops with age, but other factors can also cause it. Depending on the severity, it can result in partial to total vision impairment as the clouded lenses obstruct the passage of light to the retina.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of permanent blindness in the Philippines and the world. It refers to a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, crucial for transmitting visual information to the brain. The disease can be categorized into two main types: open-angle and angle-closure glaucoma.
