Genetic Eye Conditions

Abnormalities in a person’s DNA cause genetic eye conditions. They are usually inherited from one or both parents, but there are some instances when they result from new gene mutations. Proper diagnosis and treatment are necessary since these conditions can lead to blindness or severe vision impairment.

Cataract

Cataracts are prevalent in the Philippines. They are a condition characterized by clouded eye lenses, which are typically clear. The opaque lenses prevent light from passing through, causing blurry or dim vision. This eye condition can be caused by aging, injury, and other factors, and surgery is the usual treatment option doctors recommend.

Pediatric And Adult Strabismus

Strabismus, commonly known as crossed eyes, affects both adults and children. People with this condition have eyes that do not align properly because the ocular muscles controlling them are not working together. Strabismus can either be present from birth or develop later in life due to various factors, like injury or illness.

Glaucoma

Caused by damage to the optic nerves, glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss worldwide. Glaucoma patients often have an abnormal fluid buildup in the eye, which causes intense pressure and damages the optic nerves. Treatment options for this condition include medications, laser therapy, or surgery.

Retina And Vitreous Diseases

Different eye conditions affect the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye) and the vitreous humor (the gel-like substance that fills the eye). They can result from various causes, like aging, injury, or genetic factors. Early diagnosis is necessary to determine how they can be treated.

Cornea And External Diseases

Many people suffer from diseases affecting the cornea and its surrounding structures, including conjunctiva, eyelids, and sclera. These diseases are often a result of various factors, like infections, inflammation, and injuries. Doctors will perform tests to properly diagnose the condition and recommend treatment options based on their findings.

Dry Eye Syndrome

People with dry eye syndrome may experience discomfort, irritation, and vision disturbances due to the insufficient amount of tears produced by the eyes. They may feel symptoms like burning or stinging sensations, itching, and redness. For treatment, they can use artificial tears or eye drops recommended by their doctor.

Refractive Errors

Refractive errors are common vision problems that result from the eye’s inability to focus light correctly onto the retina, leading to blurred or distorted vision. This condition is divided into four main types: myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia. Treatment options include wearing prescription lenses or undergoing surgery.

Uveitis

Uveitis is a form of inflammation that affects the uvea, the middle layer of the eyes (consisting of the iris, choroid, and ciliary body). It affects people of all ages, and its symptoms include eye redness, light sensitivity, and blurry vision; they come suddenly and get worse quickly. Visiting a doctor immediately is crucial.

Blepharitis

Some people suffer from blepharitis, which is characterized by an inflammation that causes red, swollen, or crusty eyelids. This condition also leads to itching and burning sensations in the eye, coupled with increased sensitivity to light. It can be caused by bacterial infections, skin conditions, allergic reactions, and other related factors.

Conjunctivitis

Commonly known as pink eye, conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear and transparent membrane that lines the white part of the eye. It can result from bacterial or viral infections, allergic reactions, and irritant exposure, among other causes. Proper treatment depends on the cause but may include the use of antibiotics.
